What Are National Cemeteries?

There are many funeral traditions related to military personnel. However, the most traditional of these is a burial in the national cemetery. Often, national or military cemeteries hold the buried bodies or interred remains of military persons and their spouses. 

List Of National Cemeteries 

East Coast

• Maine is home to the Togus National Cemetery, located in Togus. Maine also has the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Soldier’s Lot. This is located in Augusta. 
• Little away in Maryland, in Annapolis, you have the Annapolis National Cemetery. Maryland also has the Baltimore National Cemetery and the Loudon Park National Cemetery, both of which are situated in Baltimore. Close by is the Point Lookout Ridge, the lodging of Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery. 
• In Bourne, Massachusetts is the famous Massachusetts National Cemetery. A little away in Ayer, Massachusetts is the Woodlawn Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot. 
• Coming to New Jersey, there is a prominent national cemetery in Beverly, the Beverly National Cemetery. Also in Jersey, the Finn’s Point National Cemetery of Pennsville is another notable national cemetery. 
• The State of New York is home to the Bath National Cemetery, the Calverton National Cemetery and the Cypress Hills National Cemetery, in Brooklyn. There is also the quaint Gerald B.H Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira and the Albany Rural Cemetery Soldiers' Lot. 

• Pennsylvania is home to the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville and the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. The Philadelphia National Cemetery, Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newnton, and the Allegheny Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot Pittsburgh are other Pennsylvanian national cemeteries. A few other mentions are the Ashland Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot, Mount Moriah Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot, Mount Moriah Cemetery Naval Lot and Prospect Hill Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot. 
• Vermont has two national Cemeteries; Green Mount Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot and Prospect Hill Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot. 
• Washington, D.C is home to the Congressional Cemetery Government Lots.

The Midwest

• Illinois has eleven national cemeteries. The most famous of these are the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, The Alton National Cemetery, the Camp Butler National Cemetery, the Danville National Cemetery, the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery, Mound City National Cemetery and the Rock Island Confederate Cemetery. 
• Indiana has the vast Crown Hill National Cemetery, the Marion National Cemetery, the New Albany National Cemetery, Crown Hill Cemetery Confederate Plot and the Woodland Monument Site.
• Iowa has two cemeteries that are not very popular— one in Keokuk and another in Davenport.
• Kansas is home to five; the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, the Fort Scott National cemetery, Leavenworth National Cemetery, Axter Springs City Soldiers’ Lot and Mound City Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot. 
• South Dakota has three national cemeteries; two in Sturgis and one in Hot Springs. 
• Michigan is home to four National cemeteries; one is Augusta, Holly, Machina Island and Port Huron. 
• Fort Snelling National Cemetery is the only National Cemetery in Minnesota, located in Minneapolis.  
• Wisconsin has six national cemeteries. These include the Wood National Cemetery, the Fort Winnebago Cemetery, the Forest Hill Cemetery and three others. 
• Nebraska has three national cemeteries; two in Omaha and one in Maxwell. 
• North Dakota is home to one National Cemetery in Hardwood. 
• Ohio has five national cemeteries. These include the Dayton National Cemetery, Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, Confederate Stockade Cemetery and the Woodland Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot. 
• Missouri has four national cemeteries; in St. Louis, Jefferson City, Springfield and Kansas City.

The Southern Belt

• Alabama has three national cemeteries in Montevallo, Fort Mitchell and Mobile.
• Arkansas is home to the Fayetteville National Cemetery, Fort Smith National Cemetery and Little Rock National Cemetery. 
• Florida has a total of nine national cemeteries. Five of them are located in Pensacola, St. Petersburg, Mims, Bushnell and Jacksonville. The other four are the Jacksonville National Cemetery, Sarasota National Cemetery, South Florida National Cemetery, St. Augustine National Cemetery and Tallahassee National Cemetery. 
• West Virginia has two national cemeteries in Grafton. 
• Georgia has two national cemeteries in Canton and Marietta. 
• Louisiana has two national cemeteries in Zachary, one in Pineville and another in Baton Rouge.
• Oklahoma has the Fort Gibson National Cemetery and the Fort Sill National Cemetery. 
• Texas has six national cemeteries. The Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery and the Fort Bliss National Cemetery as two notable mentions. 
• Kentucky has eight national cemeteries. They are in Southgate, Louisville, Nancy, Lexington, Lebanon, Danville, Louisville and Nicholasville. 
• North Carolina has three national cemeteries in Wilmington, Salisbury, New Bern and Raleigh. 
• South Carolina is home to three national cemeteries in Beaufort, Florence and Columbia. 
• Mississippi has three national cemeteries you should know of; one in Corinth, another in Natchez and a final one in Biloxi.
• Tennessee has five national cemeteries. Memphis National Cemetery and the Mountain Home National Cemetery are two such cemeteries. 
• Virginia is home to an astonishing fifteen national cemeteries.  Of these, Alexandria National Cemetery and Ball’s Bluff National Cemetery are two examples. 

The Far West

• Alaska has two national cemeteries, one in Fort Richard and the other in Sitka. 
• Arizona has two national cemeteries— the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona and the Prescott National Cemetery. 
• California has an impressive nine cemeteries. The Bakersfield National Cemetery IN Arvin and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery are two examples of these. 
• Utah has the beautiful Fort Douglas Port Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
• Washington has two National cemeteries; one in Kent and the other in Seattle.  
• New Mexico has a national cemetery in Fort Bayard and in Santa Fe. 
• Hawaii is home to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, located in Honolulu.
• Colorado has the Fort Logan National Cemetery, the Fort Lyon National Cemetery and the Pike Peak National Cemetery. 
• Oregon has three national cemeteries located in Eagles Point, Roseburg and Portland. 
• In Montana, the two existing national cemeteries are located in Laurel and Missoula.
