What is a Cremation Casket?

A cremation casket functions exactly as a standard casket - a sturdy container in which a loved one’s body is placed after death. Rather than being interred in a burial vault, however, cremation caskets are placed in a cremation chamber (also called a retort), which is typically located within a funeral home; the retort is heated to a specific temperature and the casket is cremated, with the ashes then collected and placed in an urn for the family to collect.

Environmental Considerations

Choosing cremation over traditional burial reduces land usage; caskets used in cremation must also be combustible, and therefore do not leave behind non-biodegradable elements. For these reasons, cremation has become a common choice for those who want a more eco-friendly option when making their end-of-life plans.

Cremation Casket Materials

Pine

Titan’s rustic, eco-friendly pine caskets are an ideal choice for those planning a cremation for their loved one. Constructed from 100% biodegradable, unfinished White Pine, these sturdy caskets open and close with a peg and dowel system; they are fastened using plastic nails that are also biodegradable, making them perfect for green burials, in addition to cremations. Our pine caskets are available with stationary wood handles or rope handles, depending on your preference, and can be customized with a simple cloth interior. At 78” long, 28.75” wide, and 14.75” high, they can easily fit within a standard crematorium retort.

In addition to our Eco Pine series caskets, we offer an Amish-inspired Lancaster Pine casket, which is made with natural, unfinished pine. It features a soft crepe interior and a latch closure system, as well as very minimal metal hardware (thus making it appropriate for cremation).

Oak

Designed and built entirely by hand, our Rustic Oak casket is solidly crafted and complemented by a textured barn board finish. It includes a soft Duck Cloth interior, elegant swingbar handles, and a customizable head panel design. The head and the foot section of the casket bed can also be adjusted for viewings. This casket is constructed using minimal metal hardware, so it is safe for cremation.

Poplar

Poplar is the most popular wood type for caskets, and Titan offers several different options. The Pillar and Artisan caskets are finished with satin walnut and are elegant in their simplicity, while the Essex and Kai caskets have a glossier cherry finish and more rounded edges. Reinforced swingbar or stationary handles assist in transport, while rosetan crepe adds a refined element to the interior. All of our poplar cremation caskets include a latch closure system and minimal metal hardware. For those buying an oversized cremation casket, we offer two different styles, the Major XL and the Poplar XL.

Cloth

We’re dedicated to helping families purchase affordable cremation caskets for their loved ones without sacrificing high quality or beautiful design, and our cloth caskets reflect that dedication perfectly. Made of ultra-strong corrugated cardboard, these caskets are covered with cloth in a serene blue-gray hue featuring a subtle pattern. This casket type offers a half couch (split lid) with a patterned white crepe interior and is available in both a rounded-top and a flat-top design; the head end of the bed is adjustable, and the casket also includes stationary handles. Our cloth caskets are available in a larger size with a 26”-wide interior.

Bamboo

Among our newer casket options are these handsome bamboo caskets. They are crafted in rural Bangladesh by expert weavers using sustainable materials; these caskets are also Fair Trade certified, so every aspect of the production process provides much-needed support to the economy of the region and the welfare of its people. These eco-friendly caskets are available in standard (84” long) and small (77” long) sizes, which accommodate loved ones measuring up to 6’5” and 5’9”, respectively. The sides of the coffin have six carrying handles, fashioned from bamboo reeds. For those wishing to host a viewing of their loved one prior to cremation, these caskets contain a simple yet sophisticated interior lining with a pillow and privacy shield, all made of natural, unbleached cotton.

Willow

Similar to our bamboo caskets, Titan’s willow caskets are made in Bangladesh by skilled craftspeople, using Certified Fair Trade methods of production. The willow plant is known for its sustainability; the willow used in our caskets grows quickly and does not need to be cut down, making it an excellent choice for those seeking an environmentally friendly option.

Some families choose to have a funeral or a memorial service with a viewing of the deceased before cremation; our willow caskets are ideal for this purpose, as they can be purchased with a separate viewing lid. The interior of the casket is lined with natural unbleached cotton and includes a matching pillow and privacy shield, providing a graceful, understated look. Willow caskets include six sturdy side handles, which are also suitable for cremation.

Seagrass

These gorgeously designed, unique seagrass caskets are Fair Trade Certified and made in Bangladesh. The primary material used in the construction of these caskets is actually willow (sustainably harvested from the same region as our all-willow caskets), with seagrass interwoven in the design for a beautiful contrast in tone and texture. In keeping with our commitment to environmental responsibility, these caskets are made using seagrass that is specially cultivated in seasonally flooded fields, rather than fragile marine environments.

The top of our seagrass caskets are slightly rounded (unlike our willow caskets, which have a flat top). They include an unbleached fitted cotton interior, a matching pillow, and a privacy shield.

Cremation caskets are made of fully combustible materials, without any metal embellishments - an element of casket design that can affect its overall price.
