Introduction

Tom Skerritt died on Wednesday 21 October 2026. He was 93. For more than sixty years he was the steady, familiar face at the heart of other people's stories: the captain of the Nostromo in Alien, the flight instructor called Viper in Top Gun, the quiet father in A River Runs Through It, and the small town sheriff in Picket Fences who finally made him a leading man on television.

His family has asked for privacy and has not yet shared any plans for a funeral or memorial. Here is what they have confirmed so far, and what has not yet been made public.

The Life and Legacy of Tom Skerritt

Tom Skerritt was born in Detroit on 25 August 1933 and grew up there during the Great Depression. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and served four years, working as a classification specialist at Bergstrom Air Force Base. He studied at Wayne State University and then, on the GI Bill, at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he set out to become a director. His first film role came in War Hunt in 1962, and a few years later Robert Altman cast him as Duke Forrest, one of the surgeons in M*A*S*H.

The parts that followed made him one of the most recognisable faces in American film. He was Captain Dallas in Alien, Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in Top Gun, Shirley MacLaine's husband in The Turning Point, Drum Eatenton in Steel Magnolias and the Reverend Maclean in A River Runs Through It. On television he played Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences from 1992 to 1996, and the role won him the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993. In a 1997 interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, he recalled a writer once describing him as a character actor locked in a leading man's body.

The News of Tom Skerritt's Passing

His family confirmed his death in a statement shared with People, Extra and other outlets on Thursday 22 October, and his publicist confirmed it to CBS News. The family said he died of natural causes. "We are heartbroken by his loss," they wrote, adding that while the world knew him through his acting, they knew him for "his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives."

The statement spoke of the things he cared about most outside the work: imagination and storytelling, service to veterans, the natural world, and helping other people find their own voices. The family thanked friends, colleagues and fans for their kindness and asked for privacy while they grieve.

The Funeral Arrangements for Tom Skerritt

No funeral arrangements have been announced. In their statement the family said that information about a memorial will be shared at a later date, and nothing further has been released since.

He was closely tied to Seattle, where he helped found TheFilmSchool and performed on stage at the Intiman Theatre, and many people there will be waiting to hear how and where he will be remembered. Until the family speaks again, the date, the place and the shape of any service remain private.

The Casket Details of Tom Skerritt

No casket maker, model or material has been made public, and the family has not said whether he will be buried or cremated. With no service yet announced, those details may become known later or may stay with the family.

Every family makes that choice differently, and you can read how Val Kilmer, who flew alongside him as Iceman in Top Gun, was laid to rest. Our guide to the casket types well known families choose explains the materials and construction involved, and our caskets and cremation urns collections show the range a family would be choosing from.

Attendees and Eulogies

With no service yet held, no eulogists or guests have been named. He is survived by his wife, Julie Tokashiki, five children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The first words of farewell have come from the people who worked beside him. Julia Roberts, who played his daughter in Steel Magnolias, called him "a shining light of a gentle man." Kathy Baker, his wife on Picket Fences for four seasons, said her heart was broken at losing "my TV husband, my partner, my darling friend," and Lauren Holly, who played his deputy on the same show, wrote simply that he "was our leader."

The Impact on Fans and the Industry

For many viewers he was the kind of actor whose name they had to look up, but whose face they knew at once. He played fathers, captains, sheriffs and mentors, and he made them feel like real people rather than types. When the news broke, tributes poured in from across Hollywood.

His colleagues have remembered a generous man as much as a working actor. Justin Shenkarow, who played his son on Picket Fences, said he was loved by so many and would be missed tremendously. Skerritt himself kept working well into his later years, appearing on stage as the narrator of Our Town at Seattle's Intiman Theatre in 2004 and making his Broadway debut in A Time to Kill in 2013.

Legacy and Remembering Tom Skerritt

Away from the camera he spent years giving other people the tools to tell their own stories. He helped found TheFilmSchool in Seattle, and he co-founded the Red Badge Project, which helps veterans living with post traumatic stress, anxiety and depression to work through their experiences by writing. In 2016 he gave a TEDx talk about the project and the way it uses writing to help veterans be heard.

His family said he will be remembered for his belief that stories can help people heal, find purpose and create change. It is a fitting way to remember an actor who spent six decades serving other people's stories. Like James Gandolfini and Richard Roundtree, he leaves behind work that audiences will keep returning to for a very long time.

Conclusion

Tom Skerritt lived to 93 and spent more than sixty of those years acting, and his family has chosen to grieve him quietly before they share how he will be remembered. For now there is no date, no service and no detail about his casket, only the promise that word of a memorial will come later. What is already clear is how many people, on both sides of the camera, feel they have lost a kind and steady presence.

When the time comes, a family's wishes are far easier to honour when they have been talked about in advance. Writing down your own funeral wishes or pre-planning a casket spares the people you love from guessing at the hardest moment.
