Standard caskets measure 84 inches long, 28 inches wide, and 23 inches high (213 × 71 × 58 cm) - large enough for most adults up to 6′5″ and 350 pounds. But casket sizes range from 30-inch infant caskets to 52-inch oversize models, and choosing the right one depends on the height and weight of your loved one as well as the burial vault and plot. This guide covers every standard casket and coffin dimension, with size charts in inches, feet, and centimetres, based on what we’ve learned helping more than 10000+ families find the right fit.

Standard Casket Dimensions

A standard casket is 84″ long × 28″ wide × 23″ high - exactly 7 feet in length. Interior space is typically 79″ × 23″, which comfortably fits most adults up to 6′5″ and 350 lbs. These dimensions are the same for steel and wood caskets, and they’re designed to fit a standard 30-inch-wide burial plot and vault.

In other units: 7 ft × 2 ft 4 in × 1 ft 11 in, or 213 cm × 71 cm × 58 cm.

How Long, Wide, and Tall Is a Casket?

How long is a casket? 84 inches; exactly 7 feet. How wide? 28 inches for a standard model, 28 to 52 inches for oversize. How tall? 23 inches with the lid closed. Coffins (tapered, six-sided) share the same length but narrow toward the feet, measuring about 24″ at the shoulders.

Oversized & Plus-Size Casket Dimensions

Oversized caskets (also called plus-size or big-and-tall caskets) keep the standard 84″ length but widen the interior. Titan Casket carries the industry’s widest oversize range — 28″, 29″, 31″, 33″, 36″, 40″, 44″, 47″, and 52″ widths, with interiors 0.25″ narrower than the exterior (a 36″ casket has a 35.75″ interior). About 9 in 10 people fit in a standard casket (especially under 300 lbs), but a triple-size coffin — generally our 44″-and-wider models — is available when needed, and some families choose an oversize coffin simply for extra interior room or additional padding.

You can browse every width in our oversize casket collection. The best-selling Atlas XL Series (28″–36″, from $1,999) is our most affordable extended-width steel option, followed by the Reflections XL and Jupiter XL Series (both 28″–36″, from $2,499). For veterans, the Veteran Premier XL (from $2,499) and Veteran Select XL (from $2,999) carry military insignia in the same 28″–36″ widths.

Prefer wood? The Wood XL Oversize line spans the full 26″–52″ range (from $2,499), including the Made-in-USA Major XL poplar. And size isn’t only about width: the Everest Extra-Long is built at 7′2″ for taller individuals (28″–33″, from $3,499), while the Commander XXL Extra-Wide (40″–44″, from $3,999) is what most people mean by a triple-size coffin. Each product page lists exact exterior and interior dimensions, and you can filter the collection by width.

Will an Oversized Casket Fit a Standard Vault and Plot?

Yes, our 28″ and 29″ oversize caskets still fit a standard 30-inch burial plot and vault. From 33″ up, you’ll need an oversize burial vault, and at widths above 33″, most cemeteries require a second or oversized plot. Confirm vault interior dimensions with the cemetery before ordering - this is the most common sizing mistake we see.

Children’s and Infant Casket Sizes

Child caskets generally start at a 30-inch interior length, with widths around 12.5 inches that scale with length. Infant caskets are available from approximately 10 inches. Sizes vary widely by age and height, so measure and consult the funeral director.

Grave, Plot, and Burial Vault Dimensions

A standard single grave plot measures about 3 feet wide by 8 feet long (36" × 96"), dug to a depth of 4–6 feet. Standard burial vaults have interior dimensions of roughly 30" wide × 86" long to accommodate the casket, with an exterior size of about 35" wide × 91" long. The 30-inch interior width is exactly why standard and 28–29" caskets fit inside a standard vault, while wider models will require an oversized vault and a wider cemetery plot.

What Size Flag Goes on a Casket?

A burial flag for a veteran’s casket measures 5 feet by 9.5 feet — the standard government-issue casket flag the VA provides at no cost. Draped over a standard 84″ casket, it covers the full lid with the union (stars) at the head over the left shoulder. The same 5′ × 9.5′ flag fits oversize caskets as well.

How to Choose the Right Casket Size

  • Height: under 6′5″: standard length is fine. Taller > talk to your funeral director about options or us.

  • Weight: under ~350 lbs:  standard width. Above that, size up using the chart > when in doubt, choose the next width up; interiors don’t stretch.

  • Vault first: confirm the cemetery’s vault and plot dimensions before buying anything wider than 29″.

  • Comfort: an oversize casket is also a valid choice purely for extra room or padding.

From 10,000+ orders, our team’s rule of thumb: most sizing problems come from guessing the vault size, not the body measurements. One call to the cemetery prevents nearly all of them.
