David Crosby Passed Away At Age 81

David Crosby, a legendary American rock musician known best for his career as part of the band The Byrds, passed away on 18 January, 2023, at the age of 81. Although the cause of death remains unknown at the moment, his former bandmates and colleagues have spoken on social media about his passing, including those who he appeared to butt heads with throughout his lifetime such as Stephen Stills.

Not just known for his solo career, Crosby was a founding member of not just one but two rock bands, The Byrds, as well as Crosby, Stills & Nash, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a part of each group. Crosby’s loss was felt by his wife and six children. Although the exact cause of death has not yet been revealed, Crosby had been battling multiple health issues in recent years and had anticipated his own passing.

About David Crosby

David Crosby was born in 1941 in California to Floyd Crosby, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker. He gravitated towards music since he was a young child, remaining indifferent towards academics in school and eventually dropping out of Santa Barbara City College to pursue a full-time career as a musician.

Crosby’s amalgamation of folk and rock music as well as his distinctive style of songwriting have certainly left a mark on the music industry as a whole. One of the first hit tracks that he was involved in creating was a version by his first band The Byrds of Bob Dylan’s track “Mr. Tambourine Man”,  and the credit for the harmonies that made this version so famous went to Crosby himself.

In 1968 Crosby became a part of a second band called Crosby, Stills & Nash after getting to know Stephen Stills and Graham Nash and beginning to jam with them informally. The band received critical and commercial success from their very first album, but over the past few decades there were many altercations between Crosby and the other band members, all of whom eventually went on to focus on their solo careers.

In 2019, when he was going through a slew of medical ailments simultaneously, he had expressed his desire for his estranged bandmates to attend his funeral when the time comes. He had also expressed and pre-planned for his funeral to be held at a horse ranch he owns in the Santa Ynez Valley in California.

Crosby also wished for his hit tracks to be performed at his funeral by his oldest son James Raymond, who is an established musician. We do not currently know what casket is going to be used for the funeral.
